“I think so.”

“I’ve got a guy.”

“Who was that?” I whisper.

“Someone who just made their last mistake,” Presley snarls, then places the phone to his ear. “Yeah, I need you at my house ASAP. Bring your kit, and grab Mason.”

Chapter 29

Ryker

“There you go, good as new.” Brent Wilder says as he finishes bandaging Dahlia’s head. According to my brother, he’s a former Marine who now works as a paramedic in town. “But I would seriously recommend a trip to the ER. She needs an MRI to make sure there isn’t any internal bleeding.” He glances back at me.

“I’ll take her,” I reply, not even trying to hide the anger in my tone.

“I really am okay,” she says, but when she tries to stand, she starts to fall, and I reach out to gather her into my arms.

“We’re getting you to the ER.”

“Can I at least get dressed first?” she asks. “Please? Five minutes will be fine, right?”

Five minutes is too long. Five seconds is too long.

“Please, Ryker?”

I nod. “Let Presley know I need a car, please.”

“Will do,” Brent replies.

I wrap the blanket even tighter around her trembling body, then lift her into my arms.

She nearly died.

Her blood still stains the pool’s steps.

But it’s nothing compared to the crimson cloud in the pool behind me.

Mason Michaels, who is apparently local PD, stands near the pool’s edge, talking to Presley and his head of security, Eli Young. They’ve been going over every step of what happened from the time this guy infiltrated the security team to him getting past the sensors and into the house.

So far, no one has any answers.

All I know is that tonight was too close.

Presley briefly looks in my direction as I pass by before heading into the main part of the house and up the stairs toward the bedrooms.

“Ryker, I can walk.”

“No.”

Since Mason already got her statement while Brent was cleaning her injury, I don’t bother waiting around to see if he’s going to need to talk to her. She needs to get checked out, so he can check in tomorrow.

I know that I won’t be able to settle until I know she’s okay.

Dahlia rests her head against my chest, her damp hair soaking through my shirt as I take the stairs quickly and push the door open to her room.

“Your heart is pounding,” she tells me.

“I almost lost you.” I set her down on the edge of the bed. “I’m going to grab you some clothes.”
