The music continues, but the people around us seem to freeze.
Coach Williams freezes too.
And me? I forget how to breathe.
Because I know that voice.
Deep.
Smooth.
Rough around the edges.
The voice I've heard in my dreams every freaking night since he disappeared.
Coach's grip loosens. I turn.
A man stands several feet away.
Tall.
Broad.
Powerful.
Dark hair is swept back from his face. A gold mask conceals the upper half of his features, but it doesn't matter.
I know him.
I would know him anywhere.
Except—
Holy shit.
He's dressed like royalty.
Not fake Halloween-costume royalty.
Actual royalty.
His dark formal coat fits his enormous body perfectly, embroidered with intricate gold detailing. Medals gleam across one side of his chest. Golden cords and tassels drape from his shoulder, and the whole effect should look ridiculous at a high school Halloween dance.
It doesn't. It looks right.
Terrifyingly right.
Like the expensive suits were the costume. Like this is the real man underneath.
My heart slams against my ribs.
Grimm.
He's here.
His eyes glow behind the gold mask. And they aren't looking at me.
They're fixed on Coach Williams.
