“My guys wouldn’t be rude enough to show up unannounced, but your VP doesn’t have the same manners.”

I opened the door to find Rock Savo stepping onto the front step. He wore a hoodie despite the warmer weather.

“I want to talk to Goldie,” he said and began moving.

I didn’t step out of Rock’s way immediately, forcing him to pause and grunt at me. After making him wait a few seconds, I adjusted my stance to allow him to enter.

“Aww, you missed me,” Goldie cooed in a sarcastic tone. “Your eyes look swollen. Have you been crying?”

Rock yanked off his hoodie and dropped it on the back of the couch. He settled next to Goldie and took her hand.

“Ginger talked to me about my feelings.”

“So, you have been crying, then?”

Rock didn’t react to her taunt and instead said, “We were born barely a year apart. You’re in all my memories of growing up. When you went missing, I felt helpless. You know how I’m never helpless.”

“Sure, you’re a big toughie,” Goldie mocked and patted his hand.

“Even after I brought you to the hospital, I couldn’t shake that sense of helplessness. Those shitty feelings made me bossy.” Rock paused when he sensed Goldie wanted to say something rude. She fought the urge and smiled. “It also made me rude to your man.”

Rock finally acknowledged me as I sat in a nearby chair. “York is a good man. I’ve never gotten a negative vibe about him. But he was taking you away from where I felt was safe. My mom helped me realize that I was letting my fears interfere with our relationship.”

Goldie grinned. “Ginger is a wise woman.”

“Yes, and she’s worried about your mom,” Rock said, making Goldie lose her smile. “Yarrow needs to come home for a while and feel normal at the Pasadena. Let her spend a few days following Duffy around. She can sleep in her bed and be surrounded by the Everything Nice Crew.”

“I’m not forcing her to stay here,” Goldie said and added, “We’ve only been in Baton Rouge for three days.”

“You’re tough, and York will keep you safe. It’s time to tell Yarrow to go home. At least for a week or two.”

“Is that the real reason you came here?” Goldie balked and yanked her hand from his. “What about your fears and tears?”

Rock reclaimed her hand in both of his. “I only came here to talk to you about my feelings and to apologize to York.”

“You haven’t really apologized, though.”

Rock considered her words before shrugging. “I think I did. I feel like I conveyed an apology.”

Goldie and Rock looked at me. Exhaling deeply, I refused to add anything to their bonding moment. Mostly, I worried that if I spoke, I might give away my irritation at how he was holding her hand.

“See, York gets it,” Rock said and nodded at me like we were on the same page. “But as I was riding down here, I started thinking about Yarrow. Once I saw this house, I knew you were in a good place. Your mom can go home and let you enjoy your new life with York.”

Goldie rested her cheek against Rock’s arm. He seemed especially massive with her snuggled next to him.

“I’ll encourage my parents to go home,” Goldie said and looked at me. “It’ll be good to have an empty house. That way, I can ride York’s dick whenever and wherever I choose.”

“Your priorities have always been solid,” Rock muttered, frowning at me. “I also know Boone and Lula will be in town for a while since Elle’s taking Sutter Cane to Pennsylvania. You won’t be alone with the Black Rainbow.”

Shaking my head, I couldn’t believe how much of a dick this guy was being. He rode into my town unannounced, snuggled on my couch with my fiancée, and didn’t even trust my club to keep her safe.

As much as I wanted to kick Rock’s ass and toss him out of my house, I realized he was right that Yarrow needed to spend time in Rawlins. Goldie was more mobile now. Her brother and friends would help her with homesickness.

I looked forward to being truly alone with Goldie for the first time in a month.

GOLDIE

I started crying as soon as my parents pulled down the street on their return to Rawlins. I’d grown accustomed to them sharing space with me. Feeling weak was easier with my mom and dad than anyone else.
