“I’d like to see him try.”
Mason snorted. Delaune might be a CEO and worth a few million, but Sebastian was a billionaire, several times over. He was more important to Delaune than the other way around, but they still held a lot of clout in New York. It wasn’t worth the fight.
“Why did you call, then?”
“I got an earful from Charlie about you and Zeb.”
Mason tensed. “What about us?”
Sebastian chuckled. “So there is an us, then?”
“Are you just calling to confirm Ryder’s gossip?”
“You know I don’t listen to Ryder, but he wrote an essay in the group chat.”
“I didn’t see that.”
“There’s one without you in it. We talk about you and Zeb, mostly.”
“How long has that been going on?”
“Two years.”
“Point made. Yes, I pulled my head out of my ass. Yes, we’re together now. Yes, I told him I love him. Anything else?”
“Glad to hear it. Who would have thought Ethan would be the last single one of the group?”
“Are we still pretending he’s not with Simmons?”
“Simmons was promoted to captain. They broke up. For good this time, it looks like.”
Mason wasn’t sure what to say. He didn’t want to see his friend hurt, but Simmons was an asshole, and Ethan could do so much better.
“Maybe it’s for the best,” said Mason. “Especially if he puts his career first. Is Ethan okay?”
“I haven’t been able to get hold of him, and neither can the guys. He’s not been at work for the last week. His secretary said he was in LA.”
“With his parents?”
“Who else would he visit out there?”
Mason was shocked. Ethan had been estranged from his parents for years since he’d walked away from the family business. He had wanted to build his own career without his parents’ names and wealth behind him.
“Maybe it was more serious with Simmons than we thought.”
“They’ve been on and off for four years, so that’s a given.”
“Four years?” Mason was dumbstruck. “Four years? How do you know that? You know what? Never mind. Of course you would know that.”
Sebastian chuckled again. There was nothing that man didn’t know. He didn’t even live in New York anymore, and he still knew what was going on everywhere.
“I’ve got a meeting in five,” said Sebastian. “Let me get to why I called, or Charlie will be on my case.”
Mason laughed. Sebastian was the alpha in any room, unless his husband was there.
“Charlie’s worried about Zeb. He’s not been engaged with the group chat for a couple of days.”
“I’ve been keeping him pretty busy,” said Mason.
