Where We Stay

Page 223

by Madeleine Rose

I reluctantly release Blair and lift my hands. Three officers come barreling through the broken doorway, two moving toward Ben while a female officer approaches us.

“He’s the one on the floor,” I tell them. “He broke into her house and attacked her.”

The officers roll Ben onto his stomach and pull his arms behind his back. He starts fighting them and yelling that he hasn’t done anything.

Fucking coward.

“Are either of you injured?” the female officer asks, looking between Blair and me.

“We’ll be fine when that fucker is in the back of a police car,” I answer, moving toward Blair again.

She’s sobbing now, her breaths coming too quickly as tears stream down her face. I wrap an arm around her when she leans into me, careful not to put pressure on any part of her that might be hurt.

That’s when Georgie appears in the doorway.

Her eyes find Blair, and her face crumples. “Blair!”

G runs across the room, and Blair falls into her arms. They both start crying as Georgie strokes Blair’s hair and holds her face between her hands.

“He’s done, babe,” G whispers. “The police have him. He can’t hurt you now.”

A moment later, Logan and Knox come through the door.

G must have called them.

I didn’t ask her to, but of course she fucking did. That’s Georgie. She drops everything when someone she loves needs her and then calls in an army for backup.

Logan takes one look at Blair before turning toward Ben, his jaw clenching so hard I can see the muscle jump.

Knox doesn’t say anything.

He’s staring at Blair.

Not Ben.

Blair.

There’s something on his face I recognize. I’ve seen versions of it before, usually when something reminds him of his old man.

“Knox?” I call carefully.

His eyes finally move toward Ben, and his expression goes completely blank.

“He touch her?” Knox asks quietly.

My stomach turns. “Yeah.”

Knox nods once. There’s no joke or smart-ass comment. Just a terrifying fucking emptiness in his expression.

“Good thing the cops got here,” he mutters.

Logan looks at him. “Knox.”

“I’m fine,” Knox answers.

He isn’t, but neither of us pushes him.

Not here.
