I stare with wide eyes at my phone.
I just told Max, “I love you.”
For the first time.
Out loud.
On a voicemail.
I press my lips together, then laugh nervously. Of all the times to say it, it had to be now. I groan.
It’s not that I didn’t mean the words. I absolutely did. I just never imagined I’d do it over voicemail.
I sigh deeply. I’ve just committed to new coaches and living in a new city, and given Max a life-changing confession, all in the span of ten minutes. We’re definitely going to have to talk about that tonight.
I start to tuck the phone away, but I can’t keep the news entirely to myself. I send a message to my parents.
Katie
Officially accepted.
Katie
Just signed the paperwork.
I immediately get a reply.
Mom
Knew it.
Dad
Does this mean I need to learn how to stream British tournaments now?
Katie
Probably.
Dad
Challenge accepted.
Next, I create a group chat and send messages to Zoe, Randy, Theo, and Lina.
Katie
It’s happened. I’ve been officially offered a place here. Yours truly is going to be coached by two of the best in the business. I’m on cloud nine right now.
I pause, then start typing again.
Katie
I never would’ve been able to do this without all your love and encouragement.
Katie
So, thank you times infinity. I miss you all like crazy. Hope we can talk soon.
