The look on Kai’s face screams betrayal.

“Oh no. How sad. To be betrayed by one’s closest friend. Yes, we sent Alok here to find your location. And he has done a fine job indeed.” Gregor looks to Kai. “Your fate lies with the orivore.”

Alok takes a step back, his brows furrowed. “You said you wouldn’t kill him.”

“And you were foolish enough to believe me!” He turns back to Kai. “You’re coming with me.” Gregor next looks over to me then to Calli. “You two will die as well.”

I see the look of panic on Alok’s face. “Kai has information that could be useful to the council; it would be in your best interest to listen.”

“I thought I made myself very clear; laws were broken, and it’s my job to make sure that I apprehend the culprits, and the grimoire. It’s simple.”

“Then why do they need to die?” Kai’s voice is low. “They know nothing, they barely understand the artifact. They’re innocent.”

Gregor laughs. “That…” He points to Calli. “You consider that unstable abomination innocent?”

“Why are you really here?” Kai asks.

“You’re not the only one we’ve been keeping watch over. These unstable things need to be put out of their misery before they procreate.” Gregor’s voice is grim. “The line dies with them. Not to mention, we cannot have one of the ancient texts of a titan roaming about on Terra. This is the last one, and you kept it from us.”

“What are you talking about?” I chime in.

“Don’t you dare speak to me,” he replies, his face twisted as if he smelled something dead. He looks at Kai. “You’re going to sit here and tell me to my face that you don’t know what I’m referring to?”

Kai doesn’t respond.

What the hell is going on? What does he know?

I look at Calli still sitting on the ground; she looks up at me with rage in her eyes.

“I think we all can agree that humans are quite repulsive creatures, but I admit it poses a good question.” Alok speaks about me and Calli as if we are nothing. But he steps between us. He’s trying to create a barrier between us and Gregor.

“This one is actually quite observant; he may be of even more use to you than Kai here.” Alok points at me.

Fucker, he’s throwing me under the bus.

“Is that so?” Gregor walks over, scanning me up and down before leaning down into my ear.

“You have the blood of a killer, monster.”

CHAPTER 40 CADE

“Fuck you,” I say in a low voice.

Gregor throws his head back laughing as he takes a step back. “The words of a human who has no choice. How pathetic.”

I look over to Kai and nod at him; he knows what to do. They need to distract him, just long enough to get Calli out of here. Thankfully, he registers the message quickly.

“I take it you wouldn’t be open to a fair trial then?” Kai says casually.

“I believe we’re past that,” Gregor responds coldly.

“Cade, what the hell is going on?” I hear Jack in my ear.

“We may have run into an obstacle. Hold for a report,” I mutter softly.

“Please be careful,” Jack responds. I can hear the fear in his voice.

I scanned the room when we first came in and surmised the door behind me could be a back entrance. I look to Calli, who has slowly moved farther off to the side near the back of the room.
