When you're single, they ask when you're getting a boyfriend.
When you have a boyfriend, they ask when he’s going to pop the question.
When you’re engaged, they ask when you’re planning on getting married.
When you're married, they ask when you're having a baby.
When you have a baby, they ask when you're having another.
It never stopped.
"I'm not in a rush." I smiled sweetly.
Cherise patted my hand. "Well, don't wait too long."
I opened my mouth. Then closed it. There were battles worth fighting. This wasn't one of them.
Just as I conceded defeat, two large, warm hands settled on my shoulders. My entire body lit up like the Electric Light Parade at Disneyland. I didn't have to look. Only one man had ever managed to turn my nervous system into a malfunctioning Christmas display with a single touch.
"Hey, beautiful." Damon's deep voice brushed against my ear. Then his lips pressed against my cheek.
My heart rolled over and showed its belly. Traitor.
"Hey."
I looked up. Big mistake. He was wearing a navy T-shirt that stretched across his chest, faded jeans, and a smile that should've required a permit.
His hair was slightly messy. His jaw was shadowed with stubble. And he looked entirely too pleased with himself. Which was unfair.
I'd spent the morning questioning my life choices, and he looked like he'd slept eight glorious hours and woke up to find out a genie had granted him unlimited wishes.
He slid into the chair beside me and turned his attention to the table. "Morning, lovely ladies."
Both my aunts melted.
"Oh, Damon. Aren't you sweet?" Aunt Beverly grinned.
"Only before noon."
She giggled. Actually giggled.
My mother remained neutral, not swooning. Which, frankly, was a relief. Someone needed to maintain standards.
Damon's hand settled on my thigh beneath the table. He gave it a gentle squeeze. I looked at him.
He smiled. Not his usual cocky grin. Something softer. Private. Like we shared a secret.
Which, technically, we did.
A very naked secret.
"Sleep okay?" he asked quietly.
I nearly choked on my coffee. "Fine."
"Good." His thumb moved against my leg.
That was it. No teasing. No suggestive comment. No wink.
