Against the background of a crisis that threatens the Bennet family, Elizabeth is forced to reconsider the man she believed she had dismissed from her life forever.

A month after Kent, Elizabeth makes an unsettling discovery of her own. Her furious refusal of Mr Darcy had been driven entirely by external causes: his dislike of her family and what she believed about his character. Elizabeth does not love Darcy. But for the first time, she wonders what her answer might have been if she had received a proposal founded only upon love, and had allowed herself to consider calmly the man who wished to make her his wife.
