When she answers the door her eyes go straight to Brady and she beams at him.
“Hi, buddy! Did you have fun with your dad?” she asks.
Brady doesn’t say anything. With his arms folded and his bag strapped to his back, he pushes past Kayla, storms into his room and slams the door behind him.
Kayla’s face falls as she looks after him.
“I guess he’s still angry at me.”
“It would appear that way.”
She takes a deep breath. “Anyway, thanks for entertaining him today.”
“You don’t have to thank me for that. I’m his father.”
She nods and starts to say goodbye, but I stop her. “Can we talk?”
“Ummm, of course.”
She steps aside, and I walk into the apartment.
“I don’t like how things are between us,” I say.
“Neither do I.”
“I’m sorry.”
Her eyebrows shoot up. “You’re sorry? What do you have to be sorry about? I’m the one who made a total mess of things.”
“No, you were right. I shouldn’t have even been considering shuttering GNN.”
“No, you shouldn’t have, but I came down on you way harder than was necessary.”
“I mean, yeah, but that was to be expected. The way you reacted is the way any normal person in your position would have reacted. I probably shouldn’t have told you.”
She closes the distance between us and puts her hands on my chest. I internally unclench and I instantly feel a thousand times lighter.
“I hate that I’ve made you feel that way. We are in a relationship. You should never feel like there’s anything you can’t tell me, and that’s why I’m the one who needs to apologize. So I’m sorry for the way I reacted when you told me.”
I smile and slowly lower my head and claim her lips in a tender kiss. “Thank you.”
She wraps her arms around my back and cuddles into my chest. “My God, seeing you around the office these past couple of days has been the worst. All I wanted to do was talk to you and take back what I said.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“I’m a little embarrassed. I asked you to factor me in when making a business decision. That’s not who I am and I hate that I did that.”
“I love you, and you—”
Before I can finish my thought, she backs away from me. “What?”
I smile. “Yeah, I realized over these last few days that I’m in love with you.”
She shakes her head and turns around. “Don’t say that.”
“Why not? It’s true.”
“How can you even know that? Plus it’s only been a minute that we’ve been seeing each other.”
