Jasper still appeared worried. “What do you think triggered it just now?”

Sascha gazed down at his perfect, sleeping baby. He couldn’t hold onto his old life, and truthfully, he didn’t want to.

“I guess it was a wave nostalgia. Remembering how much fun we had together growing up.”

“As long as we weren’t around my father, it was a blast.” Jasper furrowed his brow. “You know, now that I think about it, I guess I did spend a lot of time at your house with you and your mom.” He gave Sascha a wistful smile. “Those are great memories. The only good ones from my childhood.”

“We’ll make new ones with our own families now, right?”

Jasper sighed, but the sound was a happy one. “Yeah. We will.”

They both turned their heads at the sound of a light knock at the front door. Whoever it was seemed as though they were being mindful that there was a baby in the house, so it had to be someone they knew.

“Can you check and see who it is, Jasper?” He didn’t want to chance waking Dimitri.

“Sure.”

Jasper rose then made his way to the door. He hadn’t opened it all the way because of the cold, but whoever it was, Jasper seemed to be friendly with them.

“Hold on, Jackson. I’ll tell him.”

Jasper returned the short distance from the front door. He hooked a thumb over his shoulder. “That’s Jackson, Nic’s top security guy. Have you met?”

“Not officially, but I know who he is.” Sascha lowered his voice, “What does he want?”

“I guess Brandon and Nic are over at Nic’s workshop, and there’s a piece of furniture Brandon thinks you’ll love. He wants you to take a look at it and tell him whether it’s something you guys should buy for the house. Or something along those lines.”

Sascha pinched his eyebrows together. “He wants me to go right now?”

Jasper shrugged. “I guess there’s some truck coming by at any minute to pick everything up and deliver it all to some gallery.”

Oh yeah. Sascha remembered Brandon telling him how Nic had a couple high-end furniture galleries that bought his custom pieces.

“Well…I would, but I don’t want to take the baby out in that weather right now. And anyway, he’s asleep.”

“I don’t mind watching him for a few minutes while you run over there. All you have to do is say yes or no, right? That shouldn’t take very long.”

Sascha pondered Jasper’s offer. “How far is Nic’s workshop from here?”

“I haven’t the slightest clue. It can’t be very far, though. Jackson was all, oh, it’ll just take a minute.”

Sascha gazed down at Dimitri. He hadn’t seen any of Nic’s other creations, but Brandon had hinted around that there was a magnificent dining set he’d thought would look great in their home. That was probably what he wanted Sascha to see.

“I’m going to set him down in his cradle and see if he stays asleep.” If Dimitri put up a fuss, he’d ask Jackson to tell Brandon it wasn’t a good time. “I’ll find out from Jackson how far the workshop is from here.”

Jasper nodded then slid onto the sofa cushion next to the cradle. Sascha had to smile at how mesmerized Jasper seemed over a sleeping baby. He headed to the door, which was still open a crack.

“Hi, Jackson. I’m Sascha.” He held out his hand.

Jackson had his own hands stuffed into his coat pockets, but he removed one to shake Sascha’s. “Nice to meet you finally. Did Jasper pass along my message?”

“Yeah, he did. Sorry, I didn’t mean to leave you standing out here, but I just got the baby to sleep.”

Jackson smiled. “Oh, no problem. I imagine you must be exhausted taking care of a kid like that.”

Sascha tilted his head. Jackson’s comment struck him as off, but he couldn’t quite put his paw on it.

“How far is Nic’s workshop from here? I don’t want to leave Jasper with the baby for too long.”
