My heart does a stupid little stutter, like it just skipped a beat, and I pull away from him. “I need a shower.”
He runs a hand over his hair and down his face, still tired. “Sure. Go ahead. I've got a few things to sort out.”
When I get to my feet, he pats his sweatpants pocket and digs out his phone.
“Have you heard anything yet?” I ask. “Does anyone know where she is?”
He unlocks the screen and swipes across. “Not yet. Give me a few days. I’ve assigned my best guy to the search.”
His gaze follows me as I gather the blanket around my shoulders.
“Take your time,” he says before pointing to a corridor near the kitchen. “Use the shower in the bedroom straight through there.”
The bedroom door stands open at the end of the hall. I find a clean towel folded on the bathroom counter and a toothbrush in the packet. It’s not his, because there’s an electric toothbrush charging in the corner.
Either he keeps a suspicious number of spare toothbrushes in an apartment, or he arranged it while I slept.
I tear open the packet, cover the bristles in paste, and rinse my mouth.
Once I’m in the shower, water pounds the back of my neck and runs through my hair. I brace both hands against the tiled wall and let it beat across my shoulders.
Being here hasn’t changed anything beyond this apartment.
My family still hates the Harringtons. Ma will never accept Keira, and I have a horrible feeling she’ll try to remove her from Saint’s bed. I just don't know how she’ll do it.
Rafe would rather put Fionn in the dirt than see him stand beside me. While Dane would throw a fit before understanding that I love Fionn.
And Saint… He’ll understand more than any of them while hating every second of it.
They’ll never fully get my attraction to Fionn. It’s complicated.
The man has killed to protect me. Broken Cormac’s hands before he even admitted we had a thing. Stood between me and his father’s threats, then pushed me away because he thought hatred was safer than putting me in danger.
Every choice has cost Fionn a little piece of himself.
Suds run down my temples as I wash my hair and replay everything he'd said last night.
My chest tightens beneath the falling water.
Loving Fionn will tear through our families, and my Ma will only see a betrayal. The real question is whether she loves me enough to put my happiness before her hatred.
I turn off the water, wrap the towel beneath my arms, and squeeze the ends of my hair. When I open the door, Fionn is sitting on the edge of the bed with a black folder in his hand.
He’s freshly washed and dressed in smart trousers and a black shirt, his gold watch cuffing his wrist.
His eyes travel from my wet hair to my bare legs before returning to my face.
“I need to give you something,” he says.
The tone he uses strips the warmth of my shower away.
“What’s wrong… Is it Eilish?”
He stands and holds out his hand.
I look at the folder. “Are ya gonna give me bad news?”
“It’s not bad news.” His open hand lingers between us. “We’ll talk in the sitting room.”
