“Primal’s right. I don’t know who’s behind this or what they want, but you need to be protected at all costs,” Corbin grunts, crossing his arms.
“I can’t ask you to do that. I don’t know what’s going on. It could be nothing. It would be a waste of your time until we can figure out whether there’s more to go on.”
Coby steps forward, eyes flicking between Primal and me as he speaks. “I’ll work on getting the rest of the information. If someone is following you, I’m pretty sure they aren’t taking the time to watch their surroundings, especially not in town. Besides, I’m not sure you’re going to have much of a choice when it comes to us helping you.” He nods up at Primal, who is still standing right next to me, but his eyes are glued to me. “I’m not going to be the one to tell him no.”
I glance up and lock eyes with Primal. I don’t miss the spark in his eyes. The one I was longing for earlier.
Coby is right. There is no way I’m going to get out of them helping me. I suppose I’d better get used to being around them more than I already have.
Chapter
Fourteen
Primal
The very minute we all agreed we’d help Sibley, Corbin called for church. This is a hell of a lot more than just watching out for her. Someone is out there mentally terrorizing her.
Everyone is upset, but none more than me. Holding her in my arms earlier changed something in me. My lion settled for the time we had her close. He didn’t claw at my insides to get out the entire time I touched her, no matter how much rage flowed through my veins at the thought of something happening to her.
For weeks she’s felt as if someone’s been following her.
That shit stops now.
Granted, I feel partly responsible, not just because it took her this long to come to us for help, but because she actually thought it was me. She believed I hated her so much that I’d do something like this to her.
It’s not that I made it easy for her to think any differently. I’ve been a complete ass toward her from day one.
I feel like such a complete dick for treating her the way I have been. Not to mention how I spoke to her when she was here earlier.
I know I need to make it up to her. I’m just not sure how to go about it. The only way I can think of to make amends is to make sure she doesn’t have anything else to be scared of. To do that, I need to find whoever thinks they can fuck with her and make them pay a very painful price.
“How soon can we get some surveillance up at her house?” Corbin asks, looking across the table at both Abel and Tucker.
“A few hours at most. But it’s not going to tell us anything about what happened there before. A few of us can go out to see if we can catch a scent,” Tucker remarks.
“There’s none. I would’ve noticed it when I was there myself,” I speak up.
“Are you sure? Maybe you were too worried about what was going on inside Sibley’s house to notice what was lurking right outside it.” Tucker says, and I find myself jumping out of my chair and slamming my hand on the table.
“What the fuck are you trying to say? That I’m not doing my fucking job? I patrolled the area, and there was no other scent.”
“If that were true, she wouldn’t be here in tears, telling us about some asshole prancing around in her house while she was out," Justice points out through gritted teeth, rising to his feet. "She and I haven’t always seen eye to eye, but that doesn’t mean I don’t see her as family to this club. Because of the bullshit with you, it seems she has felt like she couldn’t come to us about it."
The tension in the room thickened by the second.
But more importantly, my VP’s words hit the mark.
“All of you, calm the fuck down. We’re not going to jump down each other’s throats. Now that we know what the fuck is up, we’re going to handle it ourselves,” Corbin orders.
I waited until Tucker and Justice both lowered themselves back into their seats before I followed suit. I’m not even sure why I’m getting agitated by their responses, they aren’t wrong. I hadn’t really been paying attention to my surroundings, but I’m positive I would’ve picked up on an outsider in my midst, especially while in lion form.
“Abel, you and Coby need to start scanning through any surveillance footage you can find in town. Sibley says this has been going on for weeks. Maybe someone is lurking, showing up in the same places more than once. Tucker, I want you and Dane to go back to Sibley’s house and see if you can find anything there.”
Now it feels as if Corbin doesn’t trust my word. “I just told you there was nothing there.”
“Primal, it’s an order. Everyone will need to work together on this.”
I lean back in my chair and tilt my head slightly. Something about the way he just said that makes me feel like I’m not going to like what he’s about to say, so I ask, “And what am I to be doing during this time?”
