I see you. “I think you need to check all those rooms.”
“Okay, stay with Harvey. I’ll search. Do not leave, understand?”
Uh, but she really, really wanted to leave.
Too late. Jonah was gone. Harvey shuffled back toward his desk.
“Harvey, get that flask out,” Kimber ordered. “And prepare to share it with me.”
“All clear.”
Kimber swung her legs from the side of Harvey’s desk where she’d been perched. She eyed Jonah as he closed in on her.
“No one is up there.” Deep brackets surrounded Jonah’s mouth. “You sure you didn’t imagine a voice?” He stopped right in front of her. One hand reached out and curled around her arm. “It had to be scary taking a tumble down the stairs that way.”
“It was scary.” Her lower lip wanted to tremble. That fall had terrified her. “And I hurt, Jonah.” In lots of places. Too many.
“Are you certain someone pushed you?”
She…wasn’t.
Jonah sent a hard stare toward Harvey. “Did you see anyone or hear anyone?”
Harvey shook his head. “Just the maintenance guys—they’re in the basement. No one else.”
So maybe she had imagined everything. But that voice… Goosebumps rose on her arms. “Will you follow me home, Jonah? I just, um…” Her voice lowered. “I don’t want to be alone.”
His hold tightened on her arm. “I will. Absolutely.”
“And you’ll stay?” Very, very low.
He nodded.
She smiled and hopped off the desk. He had to back up and release her arm. “Harvey was just filling me in on his old glory days with you.” She waved to Harvey. The flask was out of sight. It was also now empty. “Didn’t realize he trained you when you first came to Hathaway.”
Jonah shared a long look with Harvey. “Yeah, he did.”
“Until Nate Shiloh stabbed him.” She shuddered. “I really don’t want to think about knives right now.”
Jonah curled an arm around her shoulders. “No, I can see where you don’t.” Then, gruff, “Night, Harvey.”
They headed for the exit. “Harvey said you were scared,” she revealed. “That you got sick all over the original crime scene.”
“Yeah, well, you try finding all those dead girls. See how you react.”
She stopped. Turned toward him. “Why are you even here tonight?” Something that had just occurred to her. And, surely that wasn’t suspicion slipping through her? She was starting to be suspicious of everyone. To think that they were all out to get her. Even Harvey…
She glanced over at the security guard. His eyes were on her. No, on Jonah. And Harvey looked pissed.
It was just…she’d heard that Jonah had been the first to respond to Tiffany’s crime scene. How had he done that? He’d beat the patrol cars. And now he was right there, after her fall. Her gaze lingered on Harvey and his pissed expression for a moment.
But Jonah spoke, drawing her attention back to him. “I drove by the campus grounds on my way home. With everything that happened, I just wanted to keep an extra eye on the college. I saw your car in the lot and…” His hand lifted. He tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “I wanted to make sure you were all right.”
That was sweet. She flashed him a smile and then angled for the exit. “Harvey told me you used to have a crush on Shelby.” She laughed as they headed into the night. “Bet it’s wild seeing her again, huh?”
“Wild.”
The door closed behind them. She knew Harvey would lock the door.
