Jonah took her arm. Led her to her car.

He made sure she was inside safely. But before he shut the door….

Her hand flew out and caught his. “I heard about the bomb. Saw it on the news. Channel Seven. Shamus Quint was on the scene.”

“She almost died. Shelby was damn lucky tonight.”

Shelby had always been lucky. “Shamus used to be a student here. Was even an intern in my PR department for a while when he was working on his major in Communication.” Jonah’s fingers were warm and strong, and she could feel the calluses on them. “I saw you in the background.”

“Shelby is safe.”

She wasn’t worried about Shelby.

“Her bodyguard has her.”

There was an edge to his voice… “You don’t still have a crush on her, do you?” Kimber wished that she hadn’t even asked the question. No point in it. And she didn’t care. They weren’t serious. But…

“That’s dead and buried. Over long ago.”

She started to smile at him. But those words had sounded a bit too hollow.

“I’ll follow you home, Kimber.”

She wanted to tell him not to do it. To tell him that it wasn’t necessary.

But he’d backed away. He shut the door.

And all she could hear in her head was…

Dead and buried.

Jonah followed her home. He walked inside Kimber’s house like he owned the place.

They fucked in her bed. But when he came, she could have almost sworn that he started to say someone else’s name…

He curled around her after they were done. Settling in bed. They’d never actually stayed together after the sex was over before, and Kimber tried to think of a way to get him to leave. Because unease had settled within her, and she didn’t want him there. Not any longer.

“Um…so…” She cleared her throat. “I heard you were the first responder at the Tiffany Blake scene.”

She felt him tense behind her. “Where did you hear that?”

Did it matter? “How’d you get there so fast?”

“This is some damn weird after-sex talk.”

He hadn’t answered her question.

“I was close by, okay?” Jonah’s breath heaved out. “Why the hell do you even—” His radio crackled, and he pulled away. An emergency alert came through. Something about gunfire near a convenience store. He kissed her on the cheek. Told her to lock the doors. To call him if she got scared.

Then he was gone.

As she peeked through the curtains and watched him drive away, Kimber knew she wasn’t going to be calling Jonah. Because, sometimes, maybe you were safer alone.

Chapter Twenty

Harvey Wyle ambled down the stairs of the admin building. He didn’t normally stay so late, but this wasn’t really a normal night. Everyone was far too on edge because of that girl Tiffany dying so brutally at the new fountain.

The president of the college had personally called Harvey and a few of the other guards—the big boss had asked them to come in. To stay in some of the buildings for longer periods. To patrol the campus. The president wanted the college secure.
