With each word her shivering slows, and I place my free hand on her knee. “I’m going to go down and—”
“No!” She slaps a hand over her mouth. “Sorry. I couldn’t tell if he was armed.”
“Okay. Give me a second.” Standing, I walk over to my chest of drawers and grab my phone. I unlock the screen and open my security app on my way back to her. “Let’s see what the system recorded.”
“I’m sorry. I panicked.” She holds out her trembling hands. “I’m still freaked out.”
“Nothing to apologize for. I’d have gotten a fright too if I’d seen someone…” A human sized shadow moving through my front yard fills my screen. “Son of a bitch.”
“It’s him.”
“Yeah.”
“How’d he find me?”
“Easy enough to find the address for the wood shop. I’m more intrigued by how he got out here. The roads are closed.” They’ve been shut since yesterday morning. Nothing and no one is supposed to be able to get up here. Which means he was either here before the storm, or is so fucking obsessed with Brooke, he’s lost it completely and drove up here ignoring the danger.
“A snowmobile could do it.”
“Yes, but—”
“He has one.”
My gaze swings to Brooke.
“One of the first times he tried to get me to go on a date with him, he bragged about having it, about taking it up on the mountain all the time.”
“So he’s got some skills then.”
“Maybe. I don’t know. I never went.”
“All right. I’m going downstairs. I don’t see a weapon on him and there are plenty of things I can hide behind; he’d have to be right up against a window to see me.”
“Can you still see him?”
I flick through the cameras but can’t find anyone. “No.”
“Can you go back over the footage? See where he went?”
“I can, or I can make sure downstairs is secure while Felix checks.” My phone rings in my hand. “Speak of the devil.”
Hitting answer then speaker, I hold the phone between us. “You’re on speaker, Felix.”
“He came in on foot from the road. It looks like he circled around the property before getting close to the house and doing the same.”
“Where is he now?”
“Back where he came from.”
“Do you have anything from the camera by the road?”
“Yeah. He’s riding a bright red snowmobile. Dumb fuck doesn’t have a clue about stealth.”
“If he did, he wouldn’t have gone after Brooke the way he has.”
“No, he’s an amateur. He’s also in debt up to his eyeballs.”
“What else?”
