He inhales sharply and lurches up.
“Savy,” he rasps.
“Do you remember?” I ask.
“Yes, everything.” He looks toward the window. “Who is it?”
“Evander and Clara. Mateo and Aria are on their way.”
“We aren’t waiting,” he says, gently pushing me back.
I stand up. “I know.”
“We’ll talk about the dream later.” He sits on the side of the bed and grabs his shoes. “Get dressed,” he orders.
I rush to the closet, strip, and shove my legs into a pair of jeans. Quickly buttoning them, I pull a shirt off the hanger. As I pull it over my head, I slip my feet into some tennis shoes.
“We can’t be sure that they have bad intentions,” I say, pulling the hem of my shirt over my stomach as I leave the closet.
“We’ll still be cautious,” he says, holding out his hand.
“Agreed.” I lace my fingers with his, and we hurry out of the room. “Mateo tailored the illusion for Griffon, but also for Evander and Clara.”
“I’ll thank him later.” He stops at the front door. “If they try to hurt you, I'll give them a nightmare.”
“I’ll let you.” I squeeze his hand and nod.
He opens the door and walks outside. They aren’t in sight, so I shut the door behind us, and we move to the side of the house. I can feel their energy in the backyard. Archer guides me confidently forward. He doesn’t try to hide our approach, and swings open the gate with force.
Clara has short black hair that brushes her shoulders. She’s wearing jean shorts, a tank top, and sandals. Her tattoos glow in the dark. Evander’s baseball hat covers his black hair, but the ends curl under the edge of it. His jeans are ripped and loose, and the hems are tucked into his boots. His T-shirt is blue and is worn. They don’t look like evil masterminds, yet looks can be deceiving.
“Nice trick,” Clara says, motioning around the area.
“It must be Mateo’s spell.” Evander grins.
“He’s helping us,” I say cautiously.
“Aria must be here somewhere, too?” Clara shoves her hands in her back pockets.
“How did you know where I lived?” I ask, narrowing my eyes.
“We’ve always known.” She lifts a delicate shoulder. “Who’s this?” She grins at Archer.
I grind my teeth. “My soul bond, Archer.”
“Oh, congrats.” She stares at him.
“Stop looking at him,” I hiss.
“Sorry.” She blinks and focuses on me.
“You aren’t bonded,” Archer guesses.
“Uh…no. Gross, he’s my brother,” she says, curling her lip.
“Ditto.” Evander rolls his eyes. “She’s my annoying younger sister.”
“You aren’t a barrel of laughs to live with either,” she snarks.
