Ballad of Rioting Hearts

“Actually, they’re only in town for tonight. And they already have plans.” Riot’s tone is final. “And so do you, remember.”

“We do,” Sonatina corrects him. “We’re meeting up with Daddy. He wants to congratulate us in person. And he has some news for you.”

Riot’s face turns ashen.

Dizzy’s hands turn to fists behind her back.

“I told Micah I’d take him out on the town,” Riot says.

“Don’t worry about me.” Micah steps forward. “In a city like Vegas... I can entertain myself. Might have a drink at Devil’s...”

He winks at Willa.

“You might want to consider the kennel you’ll be in if you go there without me,” she retorts.

“Maybe we should all go. Micah can be an honorary girl for the night or something.” I don’t feel right that he should be left to his own devices despite how much I need this night out with the girls.

Dizzy breaks the murderous stare she’s leveling at Sonatina to face me. “No. We’re not going to Devil’s. As much as I usually like to torture West a little...”

“I think it’s best we don’t go to Devil’s,” Willa says, shooting Micah a glare. “It’s not particularly suitable for a girls’ night out.”

“Yes. This is about taking you somewhere normal and public where you can dance and let off some steam.” Dizzy takes my hands. “We’re going to have way too many fruity, colorful cocktails. And we’re going to stay away from boys, men, and any other dicks we might come across.”

Dizzy darts a glance at Riot. Sticks out her tongue at him.

“Let’s go drink this champagne while we get ready,” Willa says.

Sonatina’s mouth turns down. “That will be a tall order, won’t it, Kelsey?”

She finally gets my name right, and she’s still finding ways to call me a slut. I ignore her. “I need to work out what I’m going to wear.”

Micah makes himself at home on the sofa, taking his phone out and doing something with it. Dizzy and Willa follow me through the suite to my room. We pass Lennon coming out of Riot’s... Sonatina’s “love nest” as she likes to call it.

She falters when she sees the three of us. Tugs her bottom lip between her teeth and glances back into the room.

I gesture to Willa and Dizzy which room I’m in while I stop to speak to Lennon. She always seems two seconds away from a breakdown. Being around Sonatina for two seconds makes me want to punch her lights out. Lennon has been stuck with her twenty-four/seven for who knows how long. One day she is going to end up on that show Snapped. I just know it. “Are you okay?”

“I... Yes...” She nods too enthusiastically. “I’m fine.”

Maybe it’s because I hate Sonatina or because I want to push her buttons. Or maybe I just hate seeing another woman hurting because of her, but I find myself reaching out to Lennon. “We’re having girls’ night. You should come.”

“Oh.” This time her gaze goes in the direction of Sonatina. “I-I couldn’t.”

“She and Riot are going out with Carmine.”

“I didn’t know that.” She looks even more dejected.

“So... you should come. She doesn’t need to know what you’re doing when she’s not around.”

“She’ll know.” She grimaces.

“Well, if you change your mind...” I head for my room.

“Wait.” She hurries after me. “If I did decide to come... what should I wear?”

“Whatever you want.”

She follows me into the room. Willa has made herself at home in Riot’s chair. Shoes off, she has her feet up on the bed. Dizzy sits cross legged on the mattress. She hands the opened champagne to Willa, who holds it out to me.
