His Vow

The man who’s been cooking me breakfast in his kitchen every morning is the same man who spent fifteen years trying to destroy my father.
He bought my painting, asked for my number, and asked me out on a date.
By the second month, we were in love.
Tonight at my birthday dinner, my brother showed up already drunk.
And the second he heard my boyfriend’s last name, he dropped his glass at the bar and walked out.
I chased after him and asked what was wrong with him.
“He’s here to get revenge for his sister. Dad… Dad made her disappear when I got her pregnant. You don’t know who he is, Soleil. Your boyfriend’s using you to get to me. To us.”
So I went back inside and pulled the man I love into a dark room.
“Is it true? You’re here for revenge?”
He couldn’t look me in the eye. And when he did, he pinned me against the wall, his voice low and shaking.
“It’s true. But it was never part of the plan to fall in love with you.”
